Working Out With Kayla Itsines

image from Nike Women Facebook

When I was approached about this ebook by Kayla Itsines, I was a little skeptical. I'd never heard of her or seen anything floating around the webosphere. I responded to the email to say I wasn't really into ebooks and I'd have a think about it. Luckily they didn't take no for an answer and sent me the book anyway...

It seems that sometimes you just don't notice things when they aren't in your minds eye. Because from that point on Kayla Itsines was everywhere. I read a few blog posts about her, and then a friend / colleague (whom I very much respect when it comes to fitness) mentioned she'd been using the ebook. So I swiftly saved the copy to my desktop and had a peek.

Kayla is a fitness sensation from Australia who has touched millions of girls lives through her massive Instagram following and her 12 Week Bikini Body ebook.

I'm gonna get straight to the exercise part of things and what you can expect! ...The programme is 12 weeks long; made up of resistance workouts, cardio and stretching. Weeks 1-4 looks a little something like this....

LISS is Low Intensity Steady State Exercise whilst HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training.

For the resistance workouts you have two 7 minute circuits with 4 exercises in each. So you complete the 4 exercises as many times as you can in the 7 minutes totalling 28 minutes. This is doable right?!

The HIIT sessions are a 30:30 setup. This means you will sprint at 90- 100% capacity (approx. 12-17kmph) for 30 seconds and then be at stand still (or cruise) for 30 seconds, then repeat for a total of 10-15 minutes. You can either do this on a treadmill or stationary bike.

...Right now, I'm stuck into triathlon training. It's something like swim 2-3x per week, run 2-3x per week and cycle when I can. It's too much for me to do anything else but once I complete my event in June, I'll need something to fill the void and I'd love to get back to strength training / gym / functional workouts to keep myself motivated!

In the meantime, check out the ebook yourself and let me know your thoughts!

Have you already tried the Kayla Itsines programme?!

  1. The first I heard about this trainer was a few weeks ago through the whole legal case against two other trainers in Australia accusing her of encouraging women to eat 1,600 calories a day on her bikini body plan, or something. Glad to hear you think the workout program is sound (even though I dislike it when trainer's market products as something that will give you a bikini body... everyone already HAS a bikini body). Good luck with tri training!!

    1. YES! Body + bikini = bikini body.

Who the hell are all these people staring at each other on the beach, anyway? Read a magazine, have a popsicle and have a paddle, FFS.

    2. Thanks Bri! ...I looked up the legal case you mentioned! It's interesting! ...I'm not familiar with her nutritional plan though! I guess for those who need guidance it's a good place to start! ...I'm with you though on the Bikini Body thing...if you have a bikini, and a body...you have a bikini body! HERE HERE! lol x

  2. I've just recently found out about her and I have been looking into her ebooks. I may give her plan a try when I am done with the LJFit Challenge. Her client pics on Instagram are AMAZING!

    1. I never like or trust looking at those before and after pictures from any trainer! I can't judge how my body will react based on other people, y'know?! I'm always up for trying different methods...at the end of the day they are all pretty much the same...use the same exercises just different timings!

  4. I find the pictures on Instagram really depressing :( There doesn't seem to be any focus on exercise as something that's fun, or nice to do with your friends, just as something to change the way you look in your pants on the internet. Have you ever clicked on the hashtags on Instagram?
That said, I do do similar exercise at home anyway, AMRAP (as many rounds as possible in x time)pushups, crunches, squats and burpees, for general conditioning for triathlon and climbing, so having a programme that has been tried and tested would possibly be good for me, as I get stuck in a rut sometimes.

    1. Yeah, something like this is good for inspiration and changing things up a bit! Throwing in a few new moves is always good too...your body doesn't know what to do!

Oh gosh! I wouldnt dare click on some of those hashtags! I also don't follow any IG accounts that post those before and after pictures! I don't find them inspiring or motivating at all! I certainly agree with you...I love to exercise with friends! If I can't enjoy what I'm doing then there is no point to it at all!
