Whilst I was planning my most recent bikepacking trip, I knew I needed to consider ways to look after myself on the road. It’s been a while since I’ve used a curcumin supplement but I know there are benefits for those of us who like to keep active.
Cortiba Health who make Yellow Root, reached out to me with the opportunity to try out their liquid curcumin supplements – and it was perfect timing.
What Is Curcumin?
Curcumin is a bright yellow chemical (curcuminoid) which is the active ingredient found in turmeric. Turmeric has been used in the Eastern world since ancient times as a spice, in medicine, and for colouring and flavouring food (2).
Curcumin has a higher potency than turmeric alone, so supplementing is a great way to reap the benefits. However, it is poorly absorbed during the process of digestion.
Benefits Of Curcumin For Active Individuals
Turmeric has been shown to have natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. Specifically, curcumin has significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, chemoprotective, anticancer, and gastroprotective properties (2).
Studies of curcumin also reveal that it can help with lowering cholesterol, improving blood sugar control, reducing the symptoms of anxiety, and many other positive effects.
Some scientists suggest that the underlying problem in all of these conditions may be excessive inflammation, which can lead to a host of health issues.
For active individuals, one of the biggest benefits is that it can help in the management of exercise-induced inflammation and muscle soreness, which can enhance your recovery and performance (1).
How I Used Yellow Root Liquid Curcumin

The Yellow Root Liquid Curcumin supplement from Cortiba Health uses breakthrough technology to increase the solubility of curcumin, making it more readily available to the body, meaning you only need to use a fraction of the dose to achieve the same effects.
This also places less stress on your body, especially your liver which is the organ that would have to clear the build up on insoluble circumin.
Yellow Root Liquid Curcumin Supplement Formulations
All of the Yellow Root Curcumin formulations are vegan, gluten free, nut and dairy free. They’re available in various sizes, from 5ml (pictured) up to 15ml or 30ml bottles.
Yellow Root D3 Drops

The first of the formulations I’ve been using is this one – fortified with essential Vitamin D3 to support healthy bones and joints. Having spent a lot of time indoors recently and limited exposure to the sun during the Winter months, it’s highlighted the importance of supplementing vitamin D to keep well.
Low levels can cause fatigue, aches, poor memory and difficulties concentrating. This could then affect your sporting performance.
You’ll find 0.93mg curcumin, and 25IU of vitamin D3 in each drop. The recommend serving for 18+ years is 2 times 4 drops per day, which I add to some water 30minutes before a meal.
Yellow Root B12 Drops
The Yellow Root B12 formulation helps support metabolic balance and maintain a healthy metabolism. Vitamin B12 is also an ‘at risk’ nutrient for vegans, because it can only be sourced from animal products.
You’ll find 1.25mg curcumin, and 0.18 mcg of vitamin B12 in each drop.
Yellow Root A Drops
The Yellow Root A formulation has been fortified with Vitamin A to support immune function.
You’ll find 0.62mg curcumin, and 100mcg of vitamin A in each drop.
My Final Thoughts
I’ve definitely seen and felt benefits from supplementing with curcumin especially when it comes to being active. Rather than wait till I’m unwell, injured or training hard, I would continue to supplement as a way to reduce the chances of those happening.
The Yellow Root liquid version of curcumin is a handy way to supplement as well as being superior to other curcumin supplements in terms of absorption. As well as supporting healthy immune function, the brand itself uses certified organic ingredients and products are sustainably packaged.
