This is the part most people try to skip.

Progressive overload training only works if your body gets time to adapt to the stress you’ve applied. Muscle mass doesn’t build during the session. Strength gains don’t magically appear mid-set.

They happen after.

Recovery days.
Deload weeks.
Lower intensity sessions.
Good sleep.
Enough food.

In my strength programming, we build recovery in on purpose. Because without it, you’re not progressing — you’re just accumulating fatigue.

If your watch says Recovery, that’s not a setback. It’s a signal that your nervous system is adapting.

Not every week needs heavier weights.
Not every session needs to feel heroic.

Sometimes the smartest training decision is doing a little bit less… on purpose.

That’s how progressive overload actually works long term.

Last year I had a full freeze around swimming. Not Last year I had a full freeze around swimming.
Not dramatic. Just stuck. Overthinking. Avoiding. Making excuses.

This year? I’ve signed up for the half mile at Swim Serpentine in September. 🏊🏾‍♀️

For some people, a half mile is light work. For me, it’s a big deal.
Not because of the distance. Because of what it represents.

And the dive? In bigger events it’s sometimes just how you enter the water. For me, it’s something I choose to do. It’s fun. It’s playful. It’s proof that I’m not in that frozen place anymore.

My instructor is literally next to me cueing every detail. Head down. Arms tight. Commit.
Which feels very on brand for life right now.

Status: Maintaining. Translation: You’re holding Status: Maintaining.

Translation: You’re holding steady. No chaos. No breakthroughs. Just… consistency.

And honestly? That’s where I’ve been the last four weeks.

I’m not training for anything specific. No race. No event. No dramatic goal. Just strength training because I value it.

Maintaining doesn’t mean you’ve stopped progressing. It means you’re giving your body exactly what it needs right now.

Not every season needs heavier weights.
Not every block needs a personal record.
Not every phase needs to be “productive”.

Sometimes the goal is preserving muscle mass.
Supporting cardiovascular health.
Keeping your nervous system happy.
Moving well. Staying strong.

These low box jumps are part of my warm-up. Nothing wild. Just waking things up. And yes — I finally dusted off the workout bench that’s been living in the shed for a year 😅

Maintenance is underrated.

It’s the phase that keeps you strong enough to push when it actually matters.

If you want strength training structured properly — with progression when it’s time, and maintenance when it’s needed — that’s exactly how I programme my classes.

Not every season is about chasing more.

Sometimes the win is just showing up.
