It’s been a few years now since I started delivering online fitness from the living room of my one bedroom flat. As time has gone on, I’ve had to come up with good home gym storage ideas as the amount of equipment I own has increased!
Let’s be honest, one of the biggest challenges of working out at home, especially when you live in a smaller place, is finding a way to store all of your equipment (and also bikes for me). I’m personally trying not to let all my weights and other gear take up all the valuable space in my living room.
If you’re struggling to find a way to store your home gym equipment, don’t worry. There are a number of creative and affordable storage solutions available. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Use Your Wall Space
One of the best ways to save space in a small home gym is to use wall space for storage. You can hang dumbbells, kettlebells, and other heavy equipment on hooks or racks, providing your walls are strong enough.
You can also use wall-mounted shelving to store smaller items like resistance bands, yoga mats, and water bottles.
This doesn’t have to be a wall in one of your main spaces either… if you’ve got a storage cupboard in your home, you can increase the capacity by using the wall space in there. I’ve got shelves up in my storage cupboard.
2. Invest In A Storage Cabinet
A storage cabinet is a great way to keep your home gym equipment organised and out of sight. If like you, you have a pretty sizeable hallway, that’s a great place to put it so it can also store things like shoes and umbrellas.
There are loads of different types of storage cabinets available, like freestanding cabinets and or even cabinets that can be mounted under a desk or table. I’m a huge fan of the old school ‘locker’ style cabinets… in a bright colour to add some character.
3. Use A Bench, Baskets Or Bins
Baskets and bins are a great way to store smaller items, such as resistance bands, foam rollers, and water bottles. You can either store baskets and bins on shelves or on the floor.
4. Get Creative With Storage
Getting one of those beds that lifts up and turns into a full rack might be out of budget, but there can be more affordable storage solutions if you get creative.
Pinterest is always a good place to start when looking for creative ideas, right?!
Here’s some of the ideas I’ve used:
- fitness equipment stored under my TV stand
- my bar fits nicely behind the living room door
- dumbbells under a coffee table
- walkpad next to a wall in the hallway
5. Use Under-Bed Storage
Whether it’s in a spare bedroom, or your main bedroom, under-bed space for storage is a good option. Get yourself some baskets, bins or drawers that fit under the bed to store your equipment.
6. If You Have A Garage, Use It
If you have a garage, it’s the perfect space to set up as small home gym. I love the ‘heavy duty’ look of metal cupboards, racks or shelving, which would blend in / work well with the garage being used to store tools too.
Hopefully these home gym storage ideas have given you some food for thought to utilise whatever space you have for equipment.
