According to my records (lol) it’s been at least a decade since I personally discovered matcha green tea powder and perfected my own matcha latte recipe.
My first chance to experiment was with ceremonial grade matcha from Kiss Me Organics, which it seems is no longer available. But these days, there are plenty more options available.
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from specially grown and processed green tea leaves. It is a traditional Japanese tea used in tea ceremonies, but it has also gained popularity worldwide as an ingredient in just about everything – from including drinks, baked goods / desserts and savoury dishes.
Matcha has a distinct vibrant green color, especially compared to regular green tea, which comes from the production process. The tea plants are kept in the shade for weeks before harvesting as this increases the chlorophyll content and gives the leaves their dark green colour.
After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, and then ground into a fine powder using traditional stone mills.

Matcha also has a really uniques flavour – it’s rich, slightly sweet with vegetal undertones, and it also has many health benefits. Due to its concentrated form, matcha contains higher levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals compared to steeped green tea. It also contains a moderate amount of caffeine, which can provide a boost of energy without the jitteriness often associated with coffee.

Make The Perfect Matcha Latte
Since I started working at home, I perfected my homemade oat milk latte which has saved me from having to frequent coffee shops too often, ‘cos lets be honest, making your favourite drinks at home works out to be a fraction of the price.
If you wanna be all fancy, you can use the more traditional equipment like a matcha bowl and bamboo whisk, but what you probably already have in the kitchen will do just fine.
The most important thing you will need is a high quality matcha powder. I’m using DIRTEA matcha, which I got from Healf (you can use my referral code ELLE87242 to get £10 your first order – £40 spend – so perfect for this Matcha powder).
DIRTEA matcha is a pure ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha combined with functional mushrooms and adaptogens for an energy boost, to enhance mood, and protect your skin from free radicals.
The only other major choice you need to make is what milk to use. You can use regular cows milk, or any of the many milk alternatives. My personal preference is to use oat milk as firstly, I’m lactose intolerant and secondly, it adds a natural sweetness and makes more creamy matcha lattes. Other milks you can try are coconut milk, pea milk, or almond milk.
I top off my creamy iced matcha latte with a little honey, but you could also use maple syrup, agave syrup or once you get used to the taste opt for no added sugar.
Matcha makes a delicious drink either hot or cold. I love an oat milk matcha latte as a substitute for a morning coffee when I’m trying to mix things up, whilst a cold iced matcha latte in a mason jar goes down a dream in the Summer.
Homemade Matcha Latte Recipe
This hot matcha latte recipe uses simple ingredients and is super easy and quick to make.
What You’ll Need:
- a mug
- matcha tea
- choice of milk (I’m using Califia Farms Cafe Oat Barista Blend)
- hot water (optional)
- sweetener (optional)
Method
Measure out 6g of ceremonial-grade matcha into a cup.
Heat your milk in a saucepan, a microwave, in a milk frother or using the milk frother on your coffee machine.
Pour a little of the milk (or small amount of water) into the cup with the matcha powder and whisk till smooth. I use the stick milk frother for this.
Add the rest of the milk to your matcha mixture in the cup. If you’re any good at latte art, here is where you do your thing!
Stir in your sweetener, if using.
Iced Matcha Latte Recipe
I’ve heard that the iced Starbucks matcha latte is a popular drink, so if you’re a fan, you can try making your own at hone with this easy iced matcha latte recipe.
What You’ll Need:
- a cup or mason jar
- matcha tea
- choice of milk (I’m using Califia Farms Cafe Oat Barista Blend)
- warm water
- ice
- sweetener (optional)
Method
Measure out 6g of ceremonial-grade matcha into a cup or small bowl.
Add the warm water to the matcha powder and whisk till dissolved and smooth. Add an ice cube to help bring the matcha down in temperature.
Fill a cup with ice and add your milk of choice. If you’re using a sweetener, now is a good time to add it.
Finally, pour your matcha into the cup with ice and milk. Use a straw to stir it before drinking.
Once you try this easy recipe and tweak it for the best flavour to suit your tastes, I’m pretty sure your local coffee shop is gonna miss you! Swapping your regular espresso based coffee for a matcha latte every now and again is a great way to consume less caffeine but still promoting relaxed alertness, without inducing drowsiness.
